Can I export and own my code from Lovable if I leave?

Ownership is one of Lovable's strongest selling points, and it is a genuine differentiator from more closed no-code tools. Everything Lovable builds is a standard React, Vite, TypeScript, and Tailwind codebase, and it is yours. This is not rented output that vanishes when you stop paying; it is a real repository you control.

The mechanism is two-way GitHub sync. You connect a GitHub repo, and edits you make in Lovable push to GitHub while commits you make in GitHub sync back into Lovable. That means at any moment your latest code is sitting in your own GitHub account. If you decided to leave tomorrow, you would clone that repo and continue in Cursor, VS Code, or any editor, with no export ceremony and no proprietary format to unwind.

This matters even if you never plan to leave, because it removes the biggest fear founders have about AI builders: getting trapped. Since the output is ordinary code on an ordinary stack, any developer you hire later can read and extend it. We built IdeasGPT with Lovable partly for this reason: we wanted the speed of an AI builder without giving up control of the asset.

Worth knowing on cancellation: if you downgrade to the free plan, your account, projects, and code are not deleted, so you keep what you built. You do lose paid-tier features and editing tied to the subscription, which is another reason to have your code in GitHub. Keep GitHub sync connected from early on so your repository is always current and a departure is never disruptive.

Who this reassures: anyone worried about vendor lock-in or long-term continuity. The only caveat to set expectations honestly is that owning the code means you also own the responsibility for it after you leave, including hosting and the security basics like Supabase Row Level Security. That is the normal tradeoff of true ownership, and it is a good one.
