How do I use AI ethically and disclose to customers?

Ethical AI use comes down to transparency, accuracy, and human accountability. Tell customers where AI is involved, especially in support, content, and decisions affecting them, keep a human responsible for outcomes, and guard against bias, hallucination, and privacy leaks. A short, plain-language AI policy builds trust rather than fear. Disclosure norms are tightening (the EU AI Act requires labeling some AI interactions), so being upfront now is both ethical and increasingly required.

Write a simple AI use policy. In a few sentences, explain where you use AI (e.g., to draft responses, generate content, or assist analysis), that humans review important outputs, and how you protect customer data. Publishing this signals confidence; hiding AI use and getting caught does the opposite. Match disclosure to stakes, a chatbot should identify itself as AI, while AI-assisted blog drafts that a human edits may not need a label.

Build safeguards into the work, not just the policy. The main risks are hallucination (false info), bias (in hiring, lending, or targeting), IP issues (AI output isn't reliably copyrightable, and training-data provenance can be murky), and privacy (don't paste customer PII into consumer AI tools). For each AI feature, run a quick review: what could go wrong, who's harmed, and what's the human check?

Operationalize with a pre-ship checklist: Is there a human in the loop? Are outputs grounded in sources for factual claims? Have we tested for biased outcomes? Is sensitive data excluded? Keep disclosure language ready for content, support, and any automated decisions. Regulations vary by region, the EU AI Act and various US state laws are evolving, so when AI materially affects someone's rights or money, disclose and keep a human accountable.
