Avoid pitching your solution first, you want their unfiltered reality. Twenty good interviews surface patterns: if several people describe the same painful workaround and current spend, that's strong signal. If they shrug, that's signal too.
Look for quantitative proof alongside the qualitative: search volume, active Reddit or forum threads, competitor traction, and whether existing tools have waitlists or complaints. The strongest validation is a pre-sale, getting someone to pay or commit before the product exists. Honest tradeoff: validation can't be skipped to 'just build it,' but it also shouldn't drag forever; give yourself a focused two-week window, then decide to build, pivot, or drop.
